Webbing and Casemaking Cloths Moths are found abundantly in Northwestern Pennsylvania, and Mosquito Assassin Pest control will help you Identify, Control and Eradicate them.
-
Identification
Webbing clothes moths are by far the most common clothes moth in the United States. The case making clothes moths are less common but more prevalent in the southern United States. These are small (up to 1/2 inch long), tan to buff-colored, narrow-winged moths. Larvae are 1/2 inch long, thin, and white with a dark head. The larvae create and inhabit silken tubes in the fabric on which they feed.
-
Biology
Female moths lay eggs on the larval food source. Development depends on environmental conditions and can last as long as 29 months, with up to 45 larval molts. Larvae do well in high humidity. They prefer to hide beneath folds of fabric, such as collars, and feed on keratin-based fibers (hair, fur, feathers). In the wild they can be found in the nests of birds.
-
Damage
Heavy infestations can cause significant damage to household and museum fabrics and specimens. Larvae feed on fur, animal hair, and feathers and any items containing or made of these materials. Carpets, upholstery, pillows, and clothing may be damaged by feeding.
