Carpet Beetles are found abundantly in Northwestern Pennsylvania, and Mosquito Assassin Pest control will help you Identify, Control and Eradicate them.

  • Identification

A common species is the varied carpet beetle. These tiny beetles (1/16 to 1/8) inch long they are mottled brown, black, and white in color. The larvae are tan with golden hairs and 5/32 inches long. Another commonly seen species is the black carpet beetle, This is a dark brown beetle, 1/8 to 3/16 inch in length. The larvae are unusually 1/2 inch long, dark brown, and have a long tuft of hair on the last abdominal segment. Many types of beetles resemble these species and have the same habits.

  • Biology

Female beetles lay eggs in dark crevices close to larval food sources. Development can last over a year from egg to adult depending on conditions. Adults are commonly found outdoors feeding on pollen in flowers during warm weather.

  • Damage

Larvae of carpet beetles cause damage to food and fiber, such as wool. They are generalist feeders, choosing animal-based fibers, dried skins, furs, dead and dry carcasses, and even dead insects. They will also feed on dried plant materials. The spines and hairs from the larval exoskeleton can cause contact dermatitis for sensitive individuals.
