Identification
Workers are 1/16 to1/8 inch long and monomorphic, and queens are ¼ inch long. The color can vary from brown to black, and the antennae have 12 segments with a 3-segmented club. The pedicel has 2 nodes, and a stinger is present. The defining characteristic of this ant is the deeply grooved pattern of lines on the head and thorax.

Biology
Pavement ants get their name from the habit of locating the nest under concrete slabs and other stonework. There may be a few thou sand workers and several queens in each colony, and swarms may appear at any time of the year.

Damage
Activity of pavement ants does not stop with cold weather, and they may appear indoors in wintertime. They will enter through foundation cracks and other openings and nest in walls, behind base moldings, and under floorboards, trailing along pipes or near a heat source. They will trail up to 30 feet from the colony. Food preferences are variable, from protein and grease to sweets, as pavement ants will tend aphids and other honeydew producing insects. They become a nuisance as they forage indoors for food and water.
